Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchell are part of the Abstract Expressionist movement, the first major American art movement. The ‘9th Street Show’ exhibited their works in New York in 1951. Abstract Expressionism became famous in one fell blow. However, although the three female artists pursued similar approaches to their male colleagues, they received little attention from art history for a long time.

After the film screening: discussion with the director Maria Anna Tappeiner and the curator Lea Schäfer. Moderated by Dirk Fellinghauer, ZDF/ARTE.

First broadcast on ARTE on Sunday, 11 May 2025, at 4.30 pm and on arte.tv until 8 August 2025. This film is in German.
